During the winter season we work with the various forms of energy in our kidneys and of course the energy of our blood comes in.  I often here different teachers speaking of honoring our ancestors, and I was very confused as to what this would look like.  It seems to me that putting up a picture or making a table with some items that my family member would lilke to eat would not quite be enought for me to feel as if I was honoring them.  I then decided to do a DNA kit and was amazed at all of the data that was there.  Now this information gave me a different reality of working with my ancestors through my blood.

Meet Emma Lou Epsy, my great auntie that never had any children,  I thought of her because I felt like her line was stopped, and that made me sad.  My memories of Emma Lou included her being a courageaous woman that left her home in Nashville, TN to move to Chicago, IL with her mother and she was a RN nurse. She also was a business owner in chicago where she opened her own resturant, she was an ordianed minister & Evangelist for Reverned C. Frankling church.   When thinking of Emma Lou in terms of healing I tap into the knowledge of her that was passed down via food recipes.  My family didn't always have access to hospitals or doctors, so they used food for their medicine.  Pinto beans came to me and I would like to share some of the healing uses of this legume.

Pinto Beans are a good source of essential nutrients and can help increase energy levels, these beans are great for gut, heart and building muscles.  The phenolic compounds are great for inhibiting enzymes that contribute to inflammation.  Pintos are also good at reducing blood cholesterol levels.  This is a great source of protein when supplementing protein while practicing a vegetarian diet.  Remembering alot of meals that my family made keeps me connected to them in mind, body and spirit, thank you Auntie.

I love the Autumn season, the beautiful colors offered by the trees, apple picking, pumkins and roasted corn.  This season I love to explore the many parks in my area, look at all of the various trees and enjoy the beautiful colors that they offer before they shed their leaves to the earth.  Breathing with the trees in this season is different from a summer day when you can almost smell the chlorophyll from the green leaves.  Autumn leaves naturally smell more aromatic to me,  I enjoy the exchange of energy during my walks in nature.  During this season I look to all my feelings of sadness, making sure that I pay attention to the level of energy that this sadness is using.  I choose a variety of energy building & clearing practices to work with such as:

Deep Breathing

Healing Sounds

Meditation

Yoga

Qigong Movement

Autumn is when I really start working to make sure that my immune system is ready for all of the cold and flu bugs that are coming.  I enjoy more warm beverages like Yang and Lungs.

Yang is a very nutritive blend that offers the power of Moringa leaf and Oatstraw, this healing brew has all of the warming spices of Cinnamon and the amazing color prana that the Rooibos offer.  This nutritive blend makes me feel confident that I am getting some good vitamins and minerals from the tree, spice and herb kingdom.

Lungs Herbal Tea Blend is yet another alley that I use to support my lungs when I am feeling slightly ill, this blend has so much herbal supoort to open up your chest.  Most of the ingredients in this blend is going to be supportive to get you through a cough or cold crisis.  I like to use honey and a b it of cream(almond/Oat/hemp/cashew milk) with this blend, but it can be enjoyed with just sleeping with hot water.  This blend is so aromatic and powerful that it can be steeped up to three times if your take the dried leaves and place them in the fridge to stay fresh.

Breast massage benefits

August 27, 2021

I was first introduced to breast massage while learning Female Cultivation practices  from a Qigong class.  It wasn't something that I had considered before because I didn't really look at my breast as a part of my reproductive system. The fact is I had never really looked at my breast at all, I felt very small and didn't pay that part of my body too much attention. I bought push up bras to enhance my size appearance and often sprayed perfume in my bosom because that is what ladies do.  Little did I know that I was creating an environment for toxins to invade my breast tissue.

I noticed after my second daughter that I had a small pimple on my breast. For the first time I became afraid, and wanted to care for my breast.  I then went to my doctor and got a breast exam and he told me that it was nothing to worry about, but I didn't want to neglect my breast any further.   I took a Qigong class on breast massage and that was the beginning of my journey of caring for my breast.

I learned that many layers of your skin can not be accessed without using deep tissue massage. I also started to  learn about removing negative energy from my breast through focused meditation (Inner Smile)

Having a healing oil to use was the most important part of my practice. So I would like to share my healing breast oil with you. Click here to learn more about our healing Breast oil.

A Journey to Wellness

March 7, 2021

After doing a series of deep breathing Qigong practices and focused meditation I turned in for the night. My heart was heavy and my spirit was low, A very close friend was suffering and I wasn't sure how to help her. I felt that tomorrow will be a better day laid down to sleep. As I journeyed off to sleep I had this awareness of moving away from this world, I felt very afraid because this was an expression that I had never felt before and even though I was floating into this light tunnel space I still knew that my heart was beating. When I was in this tunnel I saw a big beautiful tree and I heard a voice say Linden.

The next morning I was very happy to open my eyes and experience another day, so the first thing I did was go into my library and look into my herbal bible and started to relook at the linden herb and all of the things that it was good for. I had always used linden for its anti inflammatory properties and to soothe digestion. But surprisingly it was just the herb that she needed to help her with respiratory issues and severe anxiety.

This Beautiful tree is shaped like a triangle and that made me think of our Winter Detox group where we explored our inner trinity Mind, Body & Spirit. What was the link with the geometry of this tree and our inner trinity? After much research I figured that this was just the herb to address them all. Linden has been used for anxiety, breathing issues, cardiovascular support, menopause symptoms like hot flashes. This herb blooms in the energy of the summer and has beautiful hanging flowers that are highly aromatic. Every part of this tree pretty much is edible, leaves, flowers, seeds, sap and bark. This tree loves swampy moist soil and considered to be an adult tree in two years.

Symbolically this tree is considered to be a healing tree and sacred. It was believed that this tree would keep away evil spirits and disease. In some traditions they would have weddings under this tree.

When taking in a precious herb such as Linden, always remember the energy that is given to grow and cultivate this healing tree. All of the elements is inside this healing herb so invite this healing herb into your life and enjoy the power of the earth!

Comfrey our friend!

February 17, 2021

My first encounter with comfrey was on an herbal walk and my teacher spoke of comfrey like it was a cure all for everything, I became so excited to deeply explore this herb and went home that evening and read all that I could find about comfrey (Symphytum officinale). I was amazed at the healing benefits that this plant offered, and I wanted to get a plant and place it in my herb garden. I returned the next day and asked my teacher if she had any plants that I could purchase, and she told me that she had sold all of her plants, but she had one left that was very sad, and she would give it to me to take home. I was so excited to add Comfrey to my garden and I had planned out the spot that he would go to. After placing him into the earth I said a prayer and asked the earth to support him and was so excited to work with the earth to support his growth. Couple of days later my husband mulched the entire herb garden and to my surprise my comfrey plant was gone. I was so upset thinking that he had been either crushed in the process or smothered out by the mulch. A couple of days later I saw this beautiful strong comfrey leaf above the soil and mulch popping out to say hello. He was so healthy and strongly rooted into the earth, and it didn't take long for him to take off and grow these huge healthy leaves that were like the size of my entire body. When his purple flowers came out this let me know that he was ready to share his healing energy.

I have used this plant for many years now to create poultices, natural tinctures, herbal teas and naturals oils. We use comfrey oil in our herbal body butters to layer the healing experience that our natural skin care line offers, John Hickman is one of our herbal butters that has comfrey tincture added, the fragrance profile of John Hickman is composed of fig leaves, cocoa, patchouli, cedar, and vetiver. Many have used this blend and share of the healing energy coming from the herbal and oil intelligence and the healing energy of my Grandfather John Hickman Gooch, who was a male midwife in the south. My Grandfather and his mother Mrs. Sally Gooch delivered hundreds of children in the south during the time when people of color were not able to go into the hospital to have their children. My Grandfather was in touch with the earth the flowers & plant kingdom and did landscaping after leaving the south. His wisdom and love will live on through the many trees that he planted and the energy of his children and family that love him.

When selecting a herb that we wanted to combine in our Herbal butter we had to bring in one of the most healing plants that we could think of that would represent the energy of our grandfather, comfrey was on board to help us create this blend.

Every part of comfrey is medicinal and loaded with healing energy, comfrey has been used to help with skin issues to support healing wounds by promoting cell growth and you can use this plant for a natural fertilizer. Comfrey works with pain by reducing inflammation, sprains and strains. Internally Comfrey is used for nutritional support, our Mucilage Blend has comfrey added to assist with removing excessive mucus from the body. What a wonderful friend I have.

Thank you Father Comfrey!

The importance of using natural skin care products.

February 4, 2021

I can remember my first experience with using spices on my skin was during one of my herbal education classes. I was  so excited to enter into the Ayurvedic portion for my training and the instructor gave a lecture on skin care.   Our instructor pulled out all these small ramakins and filled them with spices that you would use for cooking and combined them with organic yogurt to make our skin care mask.  We cleaned our face with flower water that we made using fresh organic rose petals.  I was excited to try this concoction of spices on my skin.  The entire process felt right, and to my surprise, my skin was so soft.

Who would have imagined that using spices and food products on my face could leave my skin feeling so soft and refreshed.

This was the beginning of my journey in learning about the power of spices for natural skin care.  Knowing that my skin is the largest organ that I have and that everything that I place on it is absorbed into my bloodstream really makes me pay attention to my skin care now.   I went home that night and looked at all of these very expensive skin care products that I had gotten from my Esthetician and started looking up the ingredients that they were using, I had never thought of doing that before and I couldn't believe that this never crossed my mind previously.  I though on what I wanted out of my skincare and how I could use spices to achieve the same thing that these products promised, and this is was the beginning of my journey.

How many ways to steep my herbal tea blend

January 14, 2021

I always get the question "how should I steep my herbal tea blend?"  Well there are lots of ways to steep your herbals and I wanted to share my favorite ways.

First - Cover your hot infusions always:  Hot infusions are my favorite for some herbal blends because the hot water really opens up the aromatics of the herbal blend, releasing healing essential oils in the steam. So this is why we should always consider using a cover or even a saucer to contain the herbal vapors so that your blend is vary potent. You can Enjoy all that your blend has to offer.

1.  Strainer:  Somedays I just enjoy throwing my loose herbs into a pot and let them slow steep in a pot, I then strain my blend using a regular strainer.  This method I use when I want to make a strong elixir, usually one that has to sit for overnight or a couple hours. using this method you don't have to be concerned with metals from your tea ball simmering into your herbal brew. I usually simmer using copper pot or stainless steel. I use cast iron when I am brewing Yin or female tonics because of the iron enhancement.

2.  Tea balls:  Tea balls are easy to just add your dried herbs to and pour hot water on top, this method doesn't make a mess with your herbs. Your can place your herbs in the fridge and steep some blends twice. Our Lung blend is a strong herbal brew that can be steeped up to 3 times. When using our Lung blend you can steep the first brew for 2-3 minutes and then your next steep can be up to 5-8 minutes. This Brew is a powerful helper for your lungs.

3. Tea pots with Strainers:  If you choose to share your herbal tea blend of make a larger amount of herbal brew you may choose to steep your blend using a teapot. There are many different options to choose from from Yixing clay, porcelain, glass, metal, ceramic, stone, and cast iron.

4.  Mason Jar Method:  I love using this method to make sun tea, I pick my fresh herbs from my garden and put some good quality water over them and allow them to infuse in the sun. The sun and the intelligence from the healing rays provide a natural heat source to heat up your herbs and allow the power to release.

You can also add your dried herbs to a mason jar and add hot water and allow your herbs to steep and strain when your ready to enjoy your brew.  You will find that your favorite way to steep your blends are different for each types of herbal blends. This journey of creating your own healing tonics is just as creative as making your own meal.

The power of Juniper

January 1, 2021

Juniper berries are actually seeds from the juniper plant.  Juniper has been classified as a spice and is used to treat many different maladies ranging from kidney infections, urinary tract infections and digestive issues and many more.  When I think of using herbal blends I always look at using them as food and this makes it less complicated when I am considering dosing and comparing herbs to allopathic medicine .  So I would use this herbal tincture to help with digestive help because of its astringent properties, just adding  some drops in with my water and enjoying this after eating a meal.

Juniper has 87 antioxidant compounds in this healing seed/berry.  This will help with maintaining healthy skin, cell regenerations and reducing excessive inflammation so I could safely look at this blend as a nutritional supplement to add into my healing ritual if I am having a tissue repair issue.

Juniper has a reputations for being natures insulin, and this seed/berry has been shown to increase your bodies ability to make its own insulin therefore lowering blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes.

Using Juniper topically is also very effective by adding some essential oil to your massage oil while detoxing and this will help to clear energy from your lymph glands. Inhaled Juniper is very relaxing and supportive when dealing with anxiety and will help you to relax.  Juniper has a protective energy and some use it to ward off psychic attacks. Burning the juniper for some stimulates connection to other dimensions.
